The ideals at the heart of Buddhism are collectively known as the ‘Three Jewels’, or the ‘Three Treasures’. These are the Buddha (the yellow jewel), the Dharma (the blue jewel), and the Sangha (the red jewel).
Sangha: The Community
The term sangha has traditionally referred to monastics and arhats in whom lay practitioners take refuge. This has changed in the West, where sangha has come to mean the community of Buddhist practitioners generally, both monastic and lay , but is also used to describe a specific community or group. You may often hear people talk about “my sangha,” meaning the Buddhist or yoga community in which they belong. It is also no surprise that the red color and psychology of the Third Gem in Buddhism is synonymous with that of the Root Chakra in the yoga system.
Now, more than ever, is the time for practice. This is where the work is. This is where we can embody "strong back, soft heart" . The anxiety and fear we feel in the world is real and as practitioners, we can help ourselves and each other to stay deep, calm and rooted and more importantly, healthy. It is through this commitment to the process that we are able to weather the storm, together. . Yoga, meditation, compassion...Nourishment of our bodies and community... support and care for our neighbor. We always have a choice between LOVE or FEAR....
